The week of October 14 to 20, 2026 was dominated by bug fixes. Four of the twelve most-endorsed new Skyrim Special Edition uploads on Nexus Mods repair vanilla behaviour, and the week’s top two both come from the same SKSE author. Below you get the ranked list, the numbers behind it, and what each mod needs before you add it to your load order.
How this list was picked
This roundup covers mods released in the seven days from October 14 to 20, 2026, ranked by endorsements. Download counts are listed next to them. Every number below was measured on October 21, 2026, the day the data was pulled, so the live counters on each mod page will already be higher by the time you read this. Nexus endorsements only unlock after a user has downloaded a file and spent some time with it, so they are a better signal of satisfaction than raw downloads. A mod with fewer downloads and a high endorsement count usually means the people who tried it liked it.
Three filters were applied before ranking:
- New this week only. Old staples are excluded unless they reappeared as a new upload or republished page during the window. One entry, Paths of Empyrean, falls into that second group, and its section explains why.
- No adult, cheat, piracy or gambling content. Nothing in this week’s top twelve needed to be dropped on those grounds, but the filter is always on.
- Names, authors and summaries as published. Mod titles appear exactly as their authors wrote them, including hyphen spacing, so you can search for them directly in your mod manager.
Requirements below are limited to what each mod’s own summary states, plus the standard framework you need for that type of mod. Always open the Requirements tab on the Nexus page before installing, because authors add dependencies after release more often than you would expect.

The numbers behind the ranking

Endorsements set the order, but the ratio of endorsements to downloads tells you something extra: how many people who grabbed a file came back to give it a thumbs up. Across the twelve mods, the pull recorded 2,686 endorsements against 64,691 downloads, or roughly 4.2 percent overall.
| Mod | Endorsements | Downloads | Endorsement rate |
|---|---|---|---|
| Stealth Fixes – SKSE | 639 | 18,549 | 3.4% |
| Shadow Fixes – SKSE | 372 | 10,761 | 3.5% |
| Better Body Deformation | 347 | 10,239 | 3.4% |
| Hold Guard Armor SE | 277 | 5,300 | 5.2% |
| PGLite | 244 | 5,186 | 4.7% |
| Paths of Empyrean – Roleplay Perk Overhaul | 232 | 1,945 | 11.9% |
| Lingering Subtitle – Engine Fix | 113 | 1,801 | 6.3% |
| Illuminated – Spell Lighting NG | 106 | 2,616 | 4.1% |
| Karla Raven – The Curse of The Revenant | 97 | 1,337 | 7.3% |
| Skyrim Landscape and Water Fixes -Load Order Friendly Edition- | 92 | 1,431 | 6.4% |
| HDT-SMP Hold Guard Armor Patch | 84 | 2,544 | 3.3% |
| Banner Physics HDT-SMP | 83 | 2,982 | 2.8% |
Two things stand out. First, Paths of Empyrean converts nearly 12 percent of downloads into endorsements, about three times the group average, which is what you see when a returning audience already trusts the author. Second, the big download winners sit around 3.4 percent because they reached casual users who install and move on, which is normal for small, invisible fixes. A low rate on a top-three mod is not a warning sign. It just reflects reach.
Top pick: Stealth Fixes – SKSE
If you only install one mod from this week, make it Stealth Fixes – SKSE by Zzyxzz. It led every metric in the pull, it targets a system almost every character build touches, and as an SKSE plugin it fixes behaviour in the engine instead of piling edits onto records that other mods also want to change. It is low risk, broadly useful and the clearest community favourite of the week.
1. Stealth Fixes – SKSE

Zzyxzz’s pitch is direct: stealth in Skyrim is better than you think, and many bugs kept it from working. Stealth Fixes repairs those bugs so sneaking behaves the way Bethesda designed it. Its Nexus page showed 561 endorsements, making it one of the most endorsed new Skyrim SE mods of the week.
The appeal is easy to understand. Most players eventually decide vanilla stealth is either broken or trivially easy, and they reach for a full overhaul that rewrites detection formulas, perks and AI. Stealth Fixes takes the opposite route. It assumes the original design was fine and that implementation bugs were the problem, which means you keep the game’s intended balance and lose the inconsistencies. That matters if you dislike guessing whether an NPC spotted you because of your build or because of a bug.
Because it is an SKSE plugin, you need Skyrim Script Extender installed for your exact game version. Most SKSE plugins also depend on Address Library for SKSE Plugins, so check the requirements tab and match the file to your runtime, whether that is Special Edition 1.5.97, 1.6.1170 or the current Steam version, 1.7.104.
Modder's note
If you already run a stealth overhaul, install Stealth Fixes on a test profile first. A plugin that fixes the underlying behaviour can change how an overhaul’s tuned numbers feel in play, even when nothing technically conflicts.
2. Shadow Fixes – SKSE
Zzyxzz’s second entry, uploaded October 14, 2026, showed 198 endorsements on the Nexus top recently added page. Shadow Fixes targets a vanilla bug where sun shadows disappear for single frames near the edge of the screen while the camera is moving. Once you notice that flicker on a ridge line or a building edge during a pan, it is hard to stop seeing it.
This is a polish fix for players who care about image stability, and it costs you nothing in content changes. It also suits heavily modded visual setups, where a one-frame shadow pop can look worse than in vanilla because everything else is so much sharper. Like its sibling, it is an SKSE plugin, so you need SKSE and whatever runtime-specific dependencies the page lists.
If you use a shader framework or an ENB preset, test a few camera pans in an exterior with strong directional sunlight after installing. You are looking for the edge flicker to stop, not for any new artefacts. Two plugins from the same author in the top two also tells you something about the week: careful, narrow engine fixes are what the community is rewarding right now.
3. Better Body Deformation
asdt123123’s Better Body Deformation had 122 endorsements listed on the Nexus top recently added page at the time of the snapshot. It makes bodies bend and twist more naturally during animations and poses, reducing pinching and helping preserve shape and volume. Anyone who has watched an elbow collapse into a thin crease, or a shoulder shrink during a wide swing, knows the problem it is aimed at.
The value here is visible in third person, during combat animations and in screenshot poses, where vanilla skin weighting tends to fall apart at the joints. Since it works on how characters deform rather than adding new outfits or bodies, it should benefit whatever setup you already use, as long as it is compatible.
That compatibility is the thing to check. Anything that changes how bodies deform can overlap with skeleton replacers, body mesh frameworks and animation packs you already run. The summary does not list requirements, so read the description and the Posts tab for reports on your particular body and skeleton combination before installing on a long-running save.
4. Hold Guard Armor SE
4thUnknown’s Hold Guard Armor SE is a redesign of the guards’ armour, offered as a replacer and/or as a new standalone armour set. It collected 277 endorsements and 5,300 downloads, and its 5.2 percent endorsement rate is one of the healthier in the top half of the list.
Hold guards are the NPCs you see more than any others in Skyrim, so a redesign changes the feel of every city and town. The “and/or” in the summary matters: you can replace the vanilla guard armour across the province or keep vanilla guards and wear the new set yourself. That flexibility is useful if you already have a guard overhaul and only want the gear.
Pick one option during installation and stick to it. If you choose the replacer, check whether it touches the same guard outfit records as other guard mods in your list, and let your plugin sorter or a conflict check in xEdit settle which version wins. The physics patch at number 11 builds directly on this mod, which is a good sign of early community interest.
Before you install
Replacing guard outfits mid-playthrough is usually fine, but guards who already loaded in nearby cells may keep their old gear until the cell resets. Test in a fresh area before judging the result.
5. PGLite
PGLite by hakasapl drew 240 endorsements on its Nexus page. It is described as a feature-parity runtime SKSE plugin implementation of PGPatcher, built on the patcher’s already mature backend. In plain terms, it does at runtime what the standalone patcher does as a separate step.
Patchers in this family exist so that meshes actually pick up the parallax and complex material textures your texture mods ship with, instead of falling back to flat rendering. The traditional workflow is to run the patcher after every texture or mesh change and install its generated output as a mod. A runtime plugin removes that rebuild step, which is a real quality-of-life gain for anyone who swaps texture packs often and keeps forgetting to regenerate.
The words “feature parity” are the key promise here: the author is saying you do not lose functionality by switching. Before you do, read the description for guidance on what to do with any existing patcher output already in your load order, since running a generated output and the runtime plugin side by side is the sort of doubling that causes confusing results. It needs SKSE like any other SKSE plugin.
6. Paths of Empyrean – Roleplay Perk Overhaul
steelfeathers’ Paths of Empyrean overhauls all 18 skill perk trees in a balanced, lore-friendly way, focusing on fun and roleplay while staying true to the spirit of Skyrim. The summary promises skeleton armies, taming wild animals and brewing throwable bombs, among other options. It recorded 232 endorsements from just 1,945 downloads.
You will notice its Nexus page number, 58656, is far lower than everything else on this list, which sits around 195,000. That points to an older mod page that reappeared in the new-release feed this week, typically through a republish or a major new release. It also explains the 11.9 percent endorsement rate: existing fans grabbed it and endorsed it quickly.
A perk overhaul is a different kind of commitment from everything else here. It replaces systems that other perk overhauls such as Ordinator, Vokrii or Adamant also replace, so you run one, never two. It is also best started on a new character, because perks you already took on an existing save will not map cleanly onto rebuilt trees. Read the requirements tab carefully, since perk overhauls often have optional patches for popular combat, magic and crafting mods.
Modder's note
Perk overhauls tend to sit late in a plugin list so their perk edits win. After sorting, open your perk-related plugins in xEdit and confirm nothing loaded below Paths of Empyrean is quietly reverting its trees.
7. Lingering Subtitle – Engine Fix
ItzIvy’s Lingering Subtitle – Engine Fix targets the subtitle that refuses to disappear after a conversation ends. It reached 113 endorsements and 1,801 downloads, with a solid 6.3 percent endorsement rate.
The bug is minor but maddening. You finish talking to an NPC, walk away, and the last line stays pinned to the screen while you loot, fight or read a book. The name says this is fixed at the engine level, which on Skyrim usually means an SKSE plugin rather than an edited quest or script, so check the requirements tab and expect SKSE to be involved.
Engine-level fixes like this one are among the safest mods you can add. They rarely touch plugins at all, so there is nothing to sort, and they are easy to remove later if a future framework update absorbs the fix. It pairs naturally with the two Zzyxzz mods as part of a quiet, behind-the-scenes bug-fix layer.
8. Illuminated – Spell Lighting NG
Izzydoingit presents Illuminated – Spell Lighting NG as a successor to Let there be Glow, with many new features and all-encompassing spell, weapon and miscellaneous lighting and effects wrapped into an SKSE plugin. It collected 106 endorsements and 2,616 downloads.
Vanilla spell lighting is inconsistent. Some spells light up a dark crypt properly while others cast almost nothing, and enchanted weapons barely glow. A dynamic lighting layer driven by an SKSE plugin is designed to fix that consistently across spells, weapons and other sources, instead of editing individual light records one by one.
If you run Let there be Glow already, treat this as a replacement and disable the older mod before enabling Illuminated, since the author positions it as the successor. Lighting changes stack in noticeable ways, so also check how it behaves with your lighting overhaul or ENB in a dark interior. A crypt with a few Flames and Candlelight casts is the quickest test.
9. Karla Raven – The Curse of The Revenant – Custom-Voiced Follower – Halloween 2026
ColdSun’s Karla Raven is a powerful undead follower with over 1,000 lines voiced by Kerstyn Unger. The summary lists a story to discover, a romance that you build through Romantasy, custom spells, a spectral sword and a dedicated outfit design. It reached 97 endorsements and 1,337 downloads, with a 7.3 percent endorsement rate that is strong for a follower.
Fully voiced custom followers are the most labour-intensive mods on Nexus, and more than a thousand recorded lines puts Karla well above the average companion add-on. The undead theme and the “Halloween 2026” tag make this a seasonal release timed for October playthroughs, though a good follower stays useful long after the holiday.
Follower mods can overlap with follower frameworks such as Nether’s Follower Framework, so check the description for compatibility notes and any recommended settings. Romantasy is named directly in the summary, so open the requirements tab to see whether it is a hard dependency for the romance content. As with any new follower, recruit her on a test save first and walk through a few dialogue branches to make sure the voice files play.
10. Skyrim Landscape and Water Fixes -Load Order Friendly Edition-
wizkid34’s Skyrim Landscape and Water Fixes -Load Order Friendly Edition- is a large collection of fixes for graphical glitches, misplaced or duplicated objects and more. It gathered 92 endorsements and 1,431 downloads.
Landscape seams, water planes that do not meet the shoreline and objects floating a few centimetres off the ground are the kind of problems you stop seeing in a vanilla playthrough and start seeing everywhere once you install high-resolution textures. A broad fix collection cleans those up across the map without you having to hunt each one down.
The “Load Order Friendly Edition” label tells you the goal: easier coexistence with the rest of a large list. Landscape and world edits are still among the most conflict-prone categories in Skyrim modding, because city overhauls, grass mods and the Unofficial Skyrim Special Edition Patch all touch the same cells. Sort with LOOT, then open the plugin in xEdit and check its conflicts against your world mods before committing.
Before you install
Landscape and navmesh changes can bake into saves. Install world fix collections at the start of a playthrough when you can, and back up your save before adding one to an existing game.
11. HDT-SMP Hold Guard Armor Patch
tatururutia’s HDT-SMP Hold Guard Armor Patch adds cloth physics to Hold Guard Armor SE. It reached 84 endorsements and 2,544 downloads, and the fact that a physics patch appeared within days of the base mod shows how quickly that armour caught on.
Guard tabards and capes are exactly the pieces that look stiff without physics, and they are on screen constantly in every hold. With this patch, the cloth parts of 4thUnknown’s armour move with the wearer and the wind instead of clipping as a rigid shell.
The requirements are straightforward from the description: Hold Guard Armor SE at number 4 and an HDT-SMP implementation for your game version, which for most SE and AE players means Faster HDT-SMP. Let this patch overwrite the base armour’s files, since its job is to replace meshes with physics-enabled versions. Physics on every guard in a busy city has a performance cost, so check frame times in Whiterun or Solitude after installing.
12. Banner Physics HDT-SMP
JPSteel2’s Banner Physics HDT-SMP adds HDT-SMP physics to banners, with a degradation system, arrow pins, wind and weather effects, and push forces from shouts and magic. It closed the list with 83 endorsements and 2,982 downloads.
This one goes well past a simple sway effect. Banners that tear over time, keep the arrows you shoot into them, react to storms and flap away from an Unrelenting Force shout make castles, forts and camps feel physically present. It is the most playful mod on this week’s list and probably the best screenshot generator.
You need HDT-SMP, and because this adds physics objects to the world itself rather than to a single outfit, keep an eye on performance in places with many banners, such as Dragonsreach or Castle Dour. If you install both this and the guard armour patch, you only need one shared HDT-SMP setup.
Foundations this week’s mods assume
Several of the mods above share the same groundwork, and getting it right once makes the whole batch install cleanly. These are the pieces that come up repeatedly.
- Skyrim Script Extender (SKSE64). Required by Stealth Fixes, Shadow Fixes, PGLite and Illuminated, and very likely by the subtitle engine fix. Download the build that matches your exact game version and launch the game through the SKSE loader, not the default launcher.
- Address Library for SKSE Plugins. Most modern SKSE plugins use it to stay compatible across game versions. Install the file that matches your runtime.
- Unofficial Skyrim Special Edition Patch. Not required by anything here, but most large load orders include it, and world fix collections such as wizkid34’s need checking against it.
- An HDT-SMP implementation. Required by the guard armour physics patch and Banner Physics HDT-SMP. Faster HDT-SMP is the common choice for current SE and AE builds.
Before you install
Steam updates to Skyrim break SKSE plugins until SKSE and Address Library catch up. Disable automatic updates or keep a backed-up executable before adding any new SKSE plugin.
Installing this week’s batch
The standard workflow below works for every mod on this list. Mod Organizer 2 and Vortex both handle it well; if you are still choosing a manager, our guide to the best mod managers for PC games compares the options, including the case for a “multi mod manager” setup across several games.
Install steps
- Confirm SKSE and Address Library match your game version.
- Click Mod Manager Download on each Nexus page.
- Enable the mods in MO2 or deploy in Vortex.
- Install base mods before their patches.
- Sort plugins with LOOT.
- Launch through the SKSE loader and test.
In Mod Organizer 2
Downloads land in the Downloads tab, where a double-click installs each archive and runs any FOMOD installer the author included. Hold Guard Armor SE is the one to pay attention to here, since its replacer or standalone choice may be offered at this stage. Enable each mod in the left pane and drag the HDT-SMP Hold Guard Armor Patch below Hold Guard Armor SE so it wins the file conflict. Pure SKSE plugins such as Stealth Fixes usually ship as a DLL with no plugin file, so they will not appear in the right-hand plugin list at all, which is normal.
In Vortex
Vortex installs on download and asks you to deploy. When it flags a file conflict between the guard armour and its physics patch, set the patch to load after the base mod. Run LOOT from the Plugins tab, deploy again, then start the game with the SKSE loader configured as a tool.
Suggested pairings and load order notes
This week’s twelve mods fall into a few natural groups, and thinking in groups saves you from conflicts later.
The invisible bug-fix layer. Stealth Fixes, Shadow Fixes and Lingering Subtitle are engine-side fixes that touch little or nothing in your plugin list. Add all three to almost any setup. They are the lowest-risk installs of the week.
The world fix. Skyrim Landscape and Water Fixes is a fix mod too, but it edits records in world space, so it belongs in a different mental bucket. Treat it like a world overhaul: sort it with LOOT, check conflicts in xEdit and install it early in a playthrough.
The guard package. Hold Guard Armor SE plus the HDT-SMP Hold Guard Armor Patch are designed to run together. Install the base first and let the patch overwrite it.
The physics pair. Banner Physics HDT-SMP and the guard patch share HDT-SMP. Budget your performance for both together, especially in large cities.
The visual stack. PGLite, Illuminated and Better Body Deformation all change what you see. Add them one at a time, check a known scene after each, and you will know exactly which one caused any change you dislike.
The gameplay commitments. Paths of Empyrean and Karla Raven change how you play. The perk overhaul in particular wants a new character.
Modder's note
Before adding a full week of mods, duplicate your MO2 profile or create a Vortex profile and test the batch there. Rolling back a bad week then takes one click instead of an afternoon.
Troubleshooting common problems
| Symptom | Likely cause | Fix |
|---|---|---|
| Game closes at the Bethesda logo after adding an SKSE plugin | SKSE plugin built for a different game version | Match SKSE, Address Library and the plugin file to your runtime |
| Stealth Fixes or Shadow Fixes seems to do nothing | Game launched without SKSE | Start through the SKSE loader and check the SKSE log for the plugin |
| Guards still wear vanilla armour | Another guard mod overwrites outfit records, or cells have not reset | Check conflicts in xEdit and test in a fresh cell |
| Guard capes are stiff | Physics patch loaded above the base mod, or HDT-SMP missing | Put the patch after Hold Guard Armor SE and confirm HDT-SMP is installed |
| Frame drops near castles | Many physics banners or guards loaded at once | Test without Banner Physics HDT-SMP to measure its cost |
| Spell light looks doubled | Let there be Glow still active alongside Illuminated | Disable the older mod |
| Perk trees look half vanilla | Another plugin overrides perk records | Check perk conflicts in xEdit and adjust order |
Who should install what
If you want a cleaner vanilla experience with no new content, take Stealth Fixes, Shadow Fixes and Lingering Subtitle and stop there. That trio fixes real problems without changing what Skyrim is.
If you run a visuals-focused list, PGLite and Illuminated are the two to test first, followed by the landscape fixes and Better Body Deformation. If you like a lived-in world, the guard armour, its physics patch and the banner physics make cities and forts feel noticeably more physical. If you are starting a fresh character this month, Paths of Empyrean and Karla Raven give you a new build path and a seasonal companion to take with you.
If you split your time between games, the same week’s Cyberpunk roundup covers the “new cyberpunk 2077 mods” that landed from October 14 to 20.
FAQ
How were these mods ranked?
They are ranked by Nexus Mods endorsements for new Skyrim Special Edition mods released between October 14 and 20, 2026. Endorsement and download counts were recorded on October 21, 2026, so live numbers will be higher.
Do these mods work on Skyrim Anniversary Edition?
Most SE mods work on AE builds, but SKSE plugins must match your exact game version. Check each mod’s file list for a build that matches your runtime before downloading.
Which mod from this week is safest to add to an existing save?
The engine-side bug fixes, Stealth Fixes – SKSE, Shadow Fixes – SKSE and Lingering Subtitle – Engine Fix, are the lowest risk. Paths of Empyrean and Skyrim Landscape and Water Fixes are better on a new game.
Why is Paths of Empyrean on a list of new mods when its page is old?
It appeared in the new-release feed during this week’s window, typically the result of a republish or major new release, and its low page number shows the original page predates the others. Its high endorsement rate reflects an existing fan base.
Do I need HDT-SMP for the guard armour?
Not for Hold Guard Armor SE itself, according to its summary. You need HDT-SMP only if you add the HDT-SMP Hold Guard Armor Patch for cloth physics, or Banner Physics HDT-SMP.
Can I use Illuminated and Let there be Glow together?
Izzydoingit describes Illuminated as the successor to Let there be Glow, so treat it as a replacement and disable the older mod.
